Early life
Lisa Valerie Kudrow was born on July 30, 1963, in Los Angeles’ Encino area. Her parents were Nedra, a travel agent, and Lee Kudrow, a doctor who specialized in headache treatment. She has two brothers, David and Derrick, and an elder sister, Helene.
She grew up in a middle-class Jewish home and had a Bat Mitzvah. She has Jewish ancestry from Belarus, Germany, Hungary, and Poland.
Some of her Belarusian relatives came from Ilya. Almost all Jews in Ilya were killed during the Holocaust, including Kudrow’s paternal great-grandmother. Her paternal grandmother eventually left Belarus for Brooklyn, where her father grew up.

Lisa studied Biology at Vassar College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, hoping to emulate her father. Lisa spent eight years working for her father while entering into acting.
Lisa’s acting career was inspired by her brother’s boyhood friend, comedian Jon Lovitz, who encouraged her to attend The Groundlings, a sketch comedy school in Los Angeles. She began by auditioning for roles on the NBC series Cheers and Saturday Night Live in 1990. Prior to her breakthrough role in Friends, she appeared in a few episodes of Bob, Newhart, Just Temporary, and Close Encounters.
Lisa co-starred as Phoebe Buffay on Friends from 1994 to 2004. She was the first cast member from Friends to get an Emmy Award. She also became one of the highest-paid television actresses of all time, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox. Lisa has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including Hanging Up, Dr. Dollitle Two, Analyze This, Simpsons, Hope & Gloria, & Scandal. Kudrow wedded a French marketing executive, Michel Stern, on the afternoon of May 27, 1995. The couple lives in Beverly Hills, California, and has a son named Julian, born on May 7, 1998.
In the fourth season of Friends, Kudrow’s character became a surrogate mother for her half-brother and his wife, resulting in triplets.
In addition to her Beverly Hills home, Kudrow owned a penthouse in Park City, Utah, which she sold in April 2017. In 2019, she revealed that she battled body dysmorphic disorder while working on Friends.
