Crestexa Media understands how difficult it can be to find the proper door size for your needs; we know that looking around for the perfect door and ending up with an ill-fitting door size is not something anyone desires.
Follow our tutorial on how to measure for a new door size to avoid getting a product that isn’t right for your needs.
Please keep in mind that if you are purchasing replacement doors, you do not need to measure the current door. You must constantly measure the door frame. Please keep the old craftsman’s adage “measure twice, cut once” in mind.
Another factor to consider when taking door measurements is how the door opens. Stand in front of the door, allowing it to open away from you, and notice whether the hinges are on the right or left side. Left side hinges indicate that the door is open to the left, whereas right side hinges indicate that the door is open to the right.
Step 1: Measure the door width
Take three measurements inside the doorframe: top, middle, and bottom. The largest measurement defines the width of the door.
Use a tape measure to determine the widths of the three regions of the door frame. Tape measure the width of the frame from left to right and record the results.
The normal UK door widths are: 24 inches/610 mm, 27 inches/686 mm, 30 inches/762 mm, and 33 inches/838 mm.
Step 2: Measure the door’s height.
Measure the interior of each vertical side of the frame. The longest length determines the required height. Remember to allow for any floor coverings.
- Use a tape measure to determine the height of the doorframe. Run the tape from the top to the bottom of each side and record the longest length.
- Remember to remember that this could be a job where you will need to stand on something like a chair to reach the top of the frame; it may be a good to make sure a family member or friend is helping you when you take these measurements.
- The usual UK height of doors is 6’6″/1981mm, but some may be 2040mm.
Step 3: Measure the door thickness
If you want to buy replacement doors while using the same frames, make sure to measure the door thickness as well.
- Use a tape measure to determine the thickness of the current door. Run a tape measure along the edge of the door and mark the thickness.
- You should also measure the rebate in the frame, where the door rests when closed.
- Both measures should be a near match to one of the UK standard door thicknesses. The most common size is 35 mm, but some doors may be 40 mm. NB: 45mm thickness typically refers to fire doors.
